Jesus at the Feast of Booths
7 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because pthe Jews1 were seeking to kill him. 2 Now qthe Jews’ Feast of rBooths was at hand. 3 sSo his brothers2 said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, tshow yourself to the world.” 5 uFor not even vhis brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, w“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but xit hates me because I testify about it that yits works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not3 going up to this feast, for zmy time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
10 But after ahis brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 bThe Jews cwere looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much dmuttering about him among the people. eWhile some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, fhe is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet gfor fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.

7-9장은 세번째 페스타벌 사이클로 출애굽의 모티브를 가지고 이제 유월절에서 초막절로 관심을 옮긴다. 티쉬리월은 9-10월에 해당하는데 유대에서 가장 경건하게 여기는 대속죄일이 자난 10일째 되는 날이다. 유월절과 초막절은 6개월의 시간차가 있다. 여기서 요한은 이 공백에 대해서 침묵한다. 이는 요한이 꼭 필요한 내용만을 지금 선별적으로 기록하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.
- Five days after this holy day the Jews held a celebration for eight days. Falling as it did at the end of the grape, fruit, and olive harvest (not wheat), Tabernacles was a time of camping for Israel. Particularly in Jerusalem, visitors set up booths all over the city in remembrance of the years when Israel wandered in the wilderness. The festival originally lasted for seven days (cf. Deut 16:13–15; Ezek 45:25), but later an eighth summary day or Solemn assembly was added that brought together the reflections of Israel’s history and hopes for Israel’s future (cf. Lev 23:36; Num 29:35–38; Neh 8:18).123 In the evenings lamps and torches were lit to commemorate God’s leading of the people at night by a pillar of fire (Exod 13:21). It is extremely important for interpreters of John to note this context for Jesus’ proclamation as the Light of the world (cf. John 8:12; 9:5)

1절) 예수님을 죽이려고 하는 유대인들, 앞서 주님의 선언(영생의 말씀, 생명의 떡)을 통해서 이를 믿지 않는 이들이 이제는 예수님께 적대적인 행동을 취하기 시작한다.
2절) 유대인의 명절, 초막절(Feast of Booths)
- The Jewish Feast of Booths, also called Tabernacles, was celebrated in September or October, two months prior to the Feast of Dedication (see note on 10:22). It is called the “Feast of Booths” because people lived in leafy shelters to remember God’s faithfulness to Israel during her wilderness wanderings (Lev. 23:42–43; cf. Matt. 17:4 par.). It was also a time of celebration and thanksgiving for the harvest (Lev. 23:39–41; Deut. 16:13–15; cf. Ex. 23:16; 34:22). See also note on John 2:13.

3-5절) 예수에게 갈릴리를 떠나 유대로 올라가서 자신이 행할 일들을 하라고 말한다. 그런데 이는 불신앙의 태도였다. 예수의 형제(야고보, 요셉, 시몬, 유다)들은 그분과 함께 생활했기에 도리어 그분의 신성을 인정하는것이 더욱 어려웠을 것이다.
6절) 내 때와 너희 때, 둘다 카이로스라는 단어를 사용했다.
- My time in John probably refers to the cross (see note on 2:4). Jesus speaks at a deeper level that is misunderstood by his brothers. Your time then refers to “your time to go up to the feast with the crowds who are going to Jerusalem.” In both cases the word “time” is kairos in Greek, meaning time that is suitable, right, or opportune.

7절) 세상이 주님을 미워하는 이유는 주님께서 세상의 행사를 악하다라고 말씀하시기 때문이다.
8-10절) 형제들은 명절에 올라가라고 하시면서 아직 자신의 때가 차지 않았기에 올라가지 않겠다라고 말씀하시는 주님, 그리고 실제로 갈릴리에 머물러 계신다. 하지만 그 이후 비밀리에 명절에 올라가신다. 이는 주님께서 사람들의 요구를 만족시키는 것이 아니라 하나님의 뜻을 따라서 행하시고 있다는 표현이요 증거이다. 인간적으로 사람들의 시선과 이목을 끌기에 충분하고도 좋은 기회가 있지만 이것을 단호히 거절하고 계신 것이다.
