요 4:46-54 왕의 신하의 병을 고치신 주님

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son
⁴⁶ So he came again to ^hCana in Galilee, ⁱwhere he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. 47 When this man heard that Jesus ^jhad come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 So Jesus said to him, ^k“Unless you³ see signs and wonders you will not believe.” 49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down ^lbefore my child dies.” 50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants⁴ met him and told him that his son was recovering. 52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour⁵ the fever left him.” 53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, ^mand all his household. 54 ⁿThis was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

46절) 왕의 신하, 아마도 이방의 백부장이었을 것이다. 3장과 4장의 내용을 통해서 볼때 요한은 예수님께서 니고데모(유력한 유대인들의 선생), 사마리아 여인(부정한 여인), 왕의 신하(로마 정부의 관리)에게 복음을 전파하셨다는 것을 이야기함을 통해서 이 복음전파의 대상이 세상의 모든 사람들이라는 것을 알리기를 원했다. 

- 본문은 앞서 행해진 갈릴리 가나의 혼인잔치 기적에 이은 두번째 이적이다. 이 두 사건은 같은 맥락속에서 진행된다. 둘 모두 주님께 간절한 도움을 청하는 것으로 시작된다. 이에 대해서 주님께서는 책망을 하시고 나서 그들의 필요를 채우시는 놀라운 반응을 보여주신다. 그리고 이 주님의 이적은 여러 사람들의 믿음을 이끌어낸다. 이것이 이 두기사의 핵심 주제이다. 

- 이 이야기는 공관복음의 사건과 유사성과 상이성이 있다.  In the Synoptic story the problem was either a paralyzed (Matt 8:5–6) or dying (Luke 7:2) servant/slave of the centurion, not a dying son as in the Johannine story (John 4:46).

48-50절) 주님께서는 먼저 이 신하와 지켜보는 이들을 향해 그들이 믿음을 위해서 표적과 기사를 구하는 것에 대해서 꾸짖으신다.  본문에서 표적은 아주 부정적인 의미는 아니다. “표적과 기사를 보지 못하면 도무지 믿지 않는다”라는 표현은 여기서 신하와 갈릴리 사람들을 향한 메시지이다. 하지만 동시에 우리들 모두를 향한 메시지이기도 하다. 이러한 표적의 의미가 먼저는 사람들로 하여금 이를 통해서 그분을 믿게 하는 것이었기에 이것, 표적과 기사 자체는 부정적인 것은 아니다. 도리어 이것만을 좇으려는 무리들의 잘못된 신앙이 문제가 되는 것이다. 

- 갈릴리 가나의 기적과 비교해볼때 더욱 의미가 드러난다. 

Indeed, as indicated earlier, the parallels in the two stories are striking. But here they diverge somewhat. In the first Cana story the mother immediately recognized that Jesus was in charge of his actions; therefore she said, “Do whatever he tells you” (2:5). In this story, however, the man moved a little more slowly, and in his begging he stressed the seriousness of his son’s situation (4:49). But the next stage of the stories is again similar. Both people heard Jesus’ command, and both did as they were commanded. The servants filled and drew the water/new wine for the guests (2:7–8). The official heard the word and responded appropriately (4:50).

신하는 주님의 꾸짖음에도 불구하고 더욱 간절히 구한다. 간절함으로 자신의 아이가 죽기전에 내려와서 고쳐달라고 청하는데 이에 대해서 주님께서는 “가라 네 아들이 살았다”라고 말씀하신다. 당시 치유의 기적은 치유자가 직접 병자를 고치는 형태로 자신의 능력을 드러내는 것에 초점을 두고 있는데 반해서 여기서는 그저 주님께서는 명령하시고 신하는 그 명령에 순종해서 믿음으로 돌아간 것이다. 그리고 그 치유의 명령은 성취되었다. 표적을 즉시로 보지 못한다 하더라고 말씀을 믿는 것이 중요하다. 이 말씀을 믿고 돌아가는 신하의 마음이 어땠을까? 분명한 확신보다는 그래야만 한다는 당위성을 가지고, 간절함을 가지고 발걸음을 옮기고 있을때 자신의 집안의 종들을 만났고 아들의 회복의 소식을 듣게 된다. 그리고 그 나은 때를 구체적으로 묻는데 이를 통해서 구체적인 확신을 가지게 된다. 

우리의 신앙도 이러하다. 처음부터 구체적인 확신을 가진다기 보다는 말씀을 믿음으로 한걸음 한걸음 순종의 발걸음은 내딛으면서 그 과정에서 그 말씀이 사실이고, 하나님께서 그 말씀의 약속을 이루신다는 사실을 구체적으로 확인하면서 확신으로 나아가게 되는 것이다. 그러기 위해서 우리는 나아와서 요청하고, 약속하신 말씀을 믿음으로 순종하고 확인하는 기회를 가지는 것이 필요하다. 

51-54절) 신하가 하인과의 만남을 통해서 분명하게 자신의 아이가 나은 시간을 확인하고 주님이 말씀하신 바로 그때 치유가 일어났다는 것을 알게된후에 자기와 그 온 집안이 다 믿게 된다. 여기서 이 신하의 믿음의 도약, 믿음의 단계적인 변화를 보게 된다. 앞서 주님이 하신 말씀을 믿고 돌아갔던 그 믿음과, 아이의 회복을 확인한 이후의 믿음은 결코 같지 않다. 믿음은 성경적인 지식의 확장뿐만 아니라 개인적인 경험을 통해서 성장해 가는 것이다. 

-  The mention of a multistage believing pattern on the part of the man (“believed,” 4:50, and then “believed,” after confirmation of the time, 4:53) should not trouble western readers because the evangelist was fully aware of stages within the believing pattern of persons related to Jesus. Many Christians have developed single-dimension theories of believing that in fact contradict growth patterns of believing in personal experience as well as biblical perspectives. Theology must be related to actual life patterns if it is to be authentic.

Jesus’ Ministry in Galilee
Jesus spent most of his life and ministry in the region of Galilee, a mountainous area in northern Palestine. Jesus grew up in the hill town of Nazareth, about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of the Gentile administrative center of Sepphoris. Soon after he began his public ministry, Jesus relocated to Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee. By Jesus’ time, a thriving fishing industry had developed around the Sea, and several of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen.
