요 4:1-15 예수님과 사마리아여인과의 만남

Jesus and the Woman of Samaria
4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and ^bbaptizing more disciples than John ²(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed ^cagain for Galilee. 4 ^dAnd he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field ^ethat Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, ^fwearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.¹
7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ^f“Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (^gFor Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you ^hliving water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 ⁱAre you greater than our father Jacob? ^jHe gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but ^kwhoever drinks of the water that I will give him ^lwill never be thirsty again.² The water that I will give him will become ^min him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, ⁿgive me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

4장의 사마리아여인과의 대화는 앞서 요한이 계속해서 강조하고 있는 물과 성령, 씻음과 정결예법이라는 2-3장의 내용과 주제를 생각나게 한다. 

1-2절) 본문은 앞서 2:23-25절의 내용을 상기시킨다. 

3-5절) 주님께서 예루살렘에서 갈릴리로 가시는 중에 사마리아의 수가라는 동네에서 한 여인을 만나신다. 

주님께서 사마리아를 통과하신 이유, 본문은 통행하여야 했다(had to pass)라고 기록한다. 이것은 하나님의 신적인 작정속에 있는 그분의 계획이었다는 의미이다. 

-  Jesus’ itinerary was subject to the sovereign and providential plan of God (“had to” translates Gk. dei, “to be necessary,” which always indicates divine necessity or requirement elsewhere in John: 3:7, 14, 30; 9:4; 10:16; 12:34; 20:9).

사마리아는 과거 앗수르의 정복으로 인해 생긴 혼혈로서 부정하게 여겨졌다.(왕하 17:5-6, 24) 에스라 9-10장에 보면 바벨론 포로이후의 이스라엘은 순결하고 하나님께 충성된 백성으로서의 열망속에서 사마리아와 다른 혼혈족과의 관계를 금하도록 했다. 

6절) 행로에 피곤하신 주님이 야곱의 우물에 앉아서 쉬셨다. 이는 주님의 인성을 강조하는 표현이다.(11:35, 19:28) / 그 시간이 제육시, 정오의 가장 더운, 뜨거운 시간이었다. 이 사마리아 여인이 더위를 피해 아침이나 저녁의 서늘한 시간에 물을 길러 오지 못한, 않은 이유는 이후에 주님과의 대화에서 밝혀진다. 

7절) 대화의 주도권을 주님이 가지시고 대화를 시작하신다. 우물가에서 할 수 있는 가장 자연스러운 대화의 주제인 물을 달라는 것을 대화를 열어가시는 주님

- 성경안에서 우물은 만남의 장소이다. 아브라함의 종과 리브가의 만남(창 24:11) 야곱과 라헬의 만남(창 29장)

9절) 유대인들은 사마리아인들과 관계를 맺으려고 하지 않았다. 왜냐하면 그들이 이방인들과 결혼하여 부정한 사람들이라고 여겼고, 그러한 정결 예법에 의해서 그들이 사용한 물건을 사용하거나 음식을 먹는 행위는 신앙심 깊은 유대인들로서는 상상할 수 없는 행동이었던 것이다. 그래서 어떤 유대인들은 지름길인 사마리아를 통하는 길을 거치지 않고 의도적으로 먼길을 택하기도 했다. 그런데 주님은 그런 사마리아 여자에게 물을 달라고 하고 있는 것이다. / 앞서 2장의 포도주 사건에서 정결 예법에 대한 부분이 반복되어 강조된다. 

10절) 주님이 여인에게 말씀하시는 생수의 의미는 이중적이다. 말 그대로 신선한 물의 의미와 동시에 신자 안에 거하시는 성령을 의미하는 것이다. 

-  Jesus’ words about living water again involve double meaning (see notes on 3:14; 8:24; 11:50–51; 19:19; cf. also 3:7–8). Literally, the phrase refers to fresh spring water (Gen. 26:19; Lev. 14:6), but John 7:38–39 identifies this “living water” as the Holy Spirit dwelling within a believer (cf. Jer. 2:13; Ezek. 47:1–6; Zech. 14:8; also Isa. 12:3).

12절) 예수님께서 말씀하신 생수의 이야기를 듣고 여인은 주님을 야곱보다 더 큰 분입니까라고 묻는다. 이는 여인에게 야곱에 대한 이해가 있었고, 자신들이 야곱의 진정한 후손이라는 인식이 있는 것을 보여준다. 하지만 여전이 주님이 어떤 분인지에 대한 이해는 왜곡되어 있다.

15절) 주님께서는 제자들과 그를 따르는 사람들을 위해서 생생한 비유들을 사용하시는데 도리어 이 비유들이 사람들의 오해를 불러일으킨다. 생수의 비유를 들은 여인은 바로 그 생수를 내게 달라고 주님께 강력히 요청한다.
