삼상 12:18-25 헛된 것을 따르지 말라

¹⁸ So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, ^xand all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said to Samuel, ^y“Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” 20 And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. 우레와 비를 보고 두려워하는 이스라엘 백성들, 실제로 밀 베는 이때에 천둥과 비가 오면 큰 피해를 입게 된다. 이제 익은 이삭들이 고개를 숙이는 이 시기는 비가 오지 않는 시기이고 이러한 시기에 비가 온다는 것은 자연의 섭리를 거스리는 신적인 행동을 의미하기 때문이다. 이러한 이적을 보고 두려워하는 백성들을 향해서 두려워하지 말것을 명하는 사무엘. 그리고 그들에게 이미 왕을 요구함으로 악을 행하였지만 이후에 여호와를 따르는데서 돌아서지 말고 오직 마음을 다하여 여호와를 섬기라고 요청하고 있다. 

그렇다면 왕을 섬기는 것 자체는 여호와를 따라 그분을 섬기는 것과 병행할 수 있는 것이다. 하지만 한번 마음을 하나님 아닌 다른 것에 빼앗긴 인생들은 결국 헛된 것을 추구할 수 밖에 없는 운명인 것이다. 

21절) 헛된 것을 따르지 말 것을 명하는 사무엘, 왜냐하면 그것들은 유익하지도, 구원하지도 못하는 것들이기 때문이다. 여기서 사무엘을 구체적인 우상의 이름을 거론하지 않는다. 여기서 사양된 헛된의 의미는 그야말로 무의미한, 가치없는이란 뜻으로 창1:2의 창조 이전의 상태를 의미한다. 

-  The noun תֹּהוּ does not denote “idol”; it is the same word used in Gen 1:2 to describe the vacant condition of the universe before God began performing the creative acts associated with the first week of creation. Samuel’s avoidance of any term referring explicitly to idols is in keeping with a common prophetic practice (cf. Jer 18:15; Jonah 2:8 [9 Hb.], Eng.). The use of substitute terms and phrases permitted them to avoid mentioning any deity other than Yahweh and thus to fulfill the letter of the Torah’s command (cf. Exod 23:13).

23절) 기도와 가르침은 선지자 사무엘의 가장 중요한 역할이었다. 그는 무엇보다 자신을 위해 기도를 요청하면서 첫째로 자신이 여호와 앞에서 기도하기를 쉬지 않도록, 둘째로 선하고 의로운 길을 백성에게 가르칠 수 있도록 기도해줄 것을 당부하고 있다. 

나라를 위해서 중보하는 사무엘, 이는 중보자로서의 모세의 모습과 매우 유사하다. 

-  On four separate occasions the Torah uses the verb פּלל to indicate that Moses prayed for Israel (Num 11:2; 21:7; Deut 9:20, 26). On other occasions Moses is also portrayed as interceding in prayer for the nation (cf. Exod 32:11–14). No other leader in Israel’s history is explicitly mentioned in Scripture as having prayed intercessory prayers for the nation so frequently.

24절) 선택받은 하나님의 백성이 해야하는 일

1) 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 행하신 큰일을 생각하는 것(consider)

2) 그분을 경외하는 것(fear)

3) 마음을 다하여 그분을 섬기는 것(serve the Lord with all your heart)

- 모든 성도들은 자신의 삶의 모든 영역에서 하나님께서 행하신 일들은 기억할 뿐만 아니라 자신의 내적인 동기, 태도, 지각을 동원하여 하나님을 섬겨야 한다. 

25절) 앞서 말대로 하나님을 온전히 섬기고 경외하지 않을때, 여전히 악을 행하면 하나님께서 우리와 우리의 왕을 모두 멸하실 것이라고 선언함. 왕을 섬기는 것 자체가 악은 아니지만 결국 하나님 보다 왕을 신뢰하는 것을 필연적으로 하나님을 떠나게 하는 것이 되는 것이다. 

우리가 따르고 섬기는 것들, 결국 그것이 우리를 구원하거나 우리를 유익하게도 하지 못함에도 불구하고 우리들은 그것이 마치 우리에게 영원한 행복과 기쁨을 줄 수 있을 것이라고 착각하며 살아간다. 유한한 인생을 살면서 무한한 가치를 깨닫고 그것을 위해서 살아갈 수 있는 인생이 지혜로운 인생이다. 헛된 것과 가치 있는 것을 구별할 수 있는 지혜를 주시기를...
