Israel Demands a King
8 When Samuel became old, ^rhe made his sons judges over Israel. ² The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 Yet his sons did not walk in his ways ^sbut turned aside after gain. ^tThey took bribes and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at ^pRamah 5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. ^uNow appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, ^vfor they have not rejected you, ^wbut they have rejected me from being king over them. 8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9 Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them ^xand show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”

8장은 이제 신정(사사들의 통치)에서 왕정으로 넘어가는 분기점이다. 사무엘의 아들들의 실정이 이유로 작용하지만 실제는 하나님을 거부하고 왕의 통치와 다스림을 요구하고 있는 것이다. 주변의 위협속에서 그들은 보이지 않는 하나님의 보호와 다스림을 신뢰하기 보다 자신들의 눈에 보이는 왕의 다스림과 보호를 요구하고 있는 것이다. 

1절) 불행의 시작은 사무엘이 그의 아들들을 사사로 삼은데 있다. 그 이전까지 사사는 세습제가 아니었다. 이전에 기드온도 이를 거절한 바 있다.(삿 8:22-23) 그런데 어떤 이유에서인지 사무엘은 자신의 아들 요엘과 아비야를 브엘세바의 사사로 삼았고, 그들은 아비의 바램과는 다르게 이익을 따라 뇌물을 받고 판결을 굽게 하였다. 그로 인해 아시라엘의 장로들이 사무엘에게 왕을 요구하고 있는 것이다. 

3절) 자신에게 주어진 직책과 권한, 힘을 가지고 이를 바르게 이용하지 않고 뇌물을 받게 되면 필연적으로 판결은 굽어질 수 밖에 없다.

5절) 인간 왕은 반드시 실패한다. 그래서 그들은 완벽한 왕을 원하는데 그분이 바로 에수 그리스도이시다. 

6절) 장로들의 요구에 대한 사무엘의 반응 : 왕을 원하는 백성, 장로들의 요구가 하나님 보시기에 옳지 않고, 사무엘이 보기에도 좋지 않은 요청이었지만 사무엘을 이 문제를 하나님앞으로 가지고 나아간다. 우리 목회자, 지도자들이 원하지 않는 요구나 반대에 직면했을때 어떻게 행동해야 하는지를 잘 보여준다. 그런데 예상 밖으로 하나님께서는 백성들의 요구를 들어주라고 말씀하신다. 우리의 속도와 방법이 있지만 그것이 하나님의 것과 다를때 반드시 우리는 하나님의 명령에 순종해야 할 것이다.
