The Birth of Samuel
1 There was a certain man of ^aRamathaim-zophim of ^bthe hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, ^can Ephrathite. ² He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
³ Now this man used to go up ^dyear by year from his city ^eto worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts ^fat Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the Lord. ⁴ On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, ^ghe would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. ⁵ But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb.^{1 6} And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. ⁷ So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. ⁸ And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? ^hAm I not more to you than ten sons?”
⁹ After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of ⁱthe temple of the Lord. ¹⁰ She was ^jdeeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. ¹¹ And she ^kvowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed ^llook on the affliction of your servant and ^mremember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, ⁿand no razor shall touch his head.”
¹² As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. ¹³ Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. ¹⁴ And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” ¹⁵ But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but ^oI have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. ¹⁶ Do not regard your servant as ^pa worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” ¹⁷ Then Eli answered, ^q“Go in peace, and the God of Israel ^rgrant your petition that you have made to him.” ¹⁸ And she said, ^s“Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman ^twent her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.
¹⁹ They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at ^uRamah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord ^vremembered her. ²⁰ And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”²

사무엘의 출생

1절) 아버지 엘가나(에브라임 사람, 에브라임 산지 라마다임소빔에 거주)

- 이후에 ‘라마’라는 지명으로 계속 언급됨(1:19, 2:11, 7:17, 8:4, 25:1)

두 아내 : 한나(엘가나가 더 사랑하는 아내로 자녀가 없음), 브닌나(자식이 없음)

3절) 이들은 매년 실로에 올라가서 하나님께 예배드리는 사람이었다. 이당시 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스가 제사장으로 실로에 있었다.

- “the Lord of hosts”, “만군의 여호와”라는 표현, 이곳에서 처음 사용됨

“Hosts” (Hb. tseba’ot) is probably the plural of an abstract noun meaning something like “plentifulness” or “numberlessness.” Hence, it refers to numerous entities such as heavenly bodies (Isa. 40:26), angelic beings (Josh. 5:14, “army of the Lord”), the armies of Israel (1 Sam. 17:45), or all creatures (Gen. 2:1).

5절) 화목제물을 한나에게는 갑절이나 주었지만 여호와께서 그녀의 태를 열지 않으셨다. 이는 그녀의 불임이 우연이 아니라는 것을 말해준다.  

6절) 브닌나는 한나가 임신하지 못함을 통해 격분하게 하고 괴롭게 하였다. 그로 인해 울고 먹지 않는 한나. 

7절) 자신을 격분 시키는 브닌나에게 인간적으로 대응하지 않고 하나님앞에 나아가는 한나, 그런 의미에서 한나는 구약의 가장 경건한 여인중의 하나라고 할 수 있다. 하나님의 성전에서 기도하는 모습이 기록된 유일한 여인이 바로 한나이다. 

8절) 한나를 위로하는 엘가나, 그의 사랑을 느낄 수 있지만 그의 위로가 근본적으로 그녀의 비통함을 해결할 수 없었다. 

11절) 한나의 서원 : 아들을 주시면 그를 나실인(머리에 삭도를 대지 않음, 포도주를 먹지 않음, 사체에 가까이 가지 않음)으로 하나님께 드릴것을 서원함

12-17) 소리를 내지 않고 기도하는 한나의 모습을 보고 술취한 여인으로 여기는 엘리 제사장, 그리고 그녀를 꾸짖음, 하지만 그녀가 비통한 심정으로 하나님께 진심으로 기도하고 있다는 것을 알고 그녀에게 축복을 내림.

18) 한나의 믿음 : 제사장의 기도를 받고나서 하나님께서 그 일을 이룰 것을 믿고 이제 다시는 슬픈 기색을 하지 않는 한나, 우리의 삶속에 참으로 그러기가 쉽지 않다. 여전히 하나님의 은혜를 알고 확신하면서도 근심하며 고민하는 우리의 모습들...

19절)  And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord ^vremembered her.

엘가나가 그의 아내 한나와 동침하매 여호와께서 그를 생각하신지라

여기서 사용되는 동침하다라는 단어의 의미, “야다”가 이곳에서 진정한 앎의 의미로 사용된다. 엘가나가 한나를 알았을때(동침할때) 하나님께서 그녀를 기억해 주신 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해서 그녀의 태를 여시고 사무엘을 허락하셨다. 

20절) 사무엘의 의미 : 하나님의 이름 혹은 하나님의 자식(자녀)라는 의미이다. 

엘가나와 한나, 브닌나 그리고 엘리의 등장 : 한가정의 아주 내밀한 가정의 아픔을 통해서 하나님께서는 위대한 사사인 사무엘을 준비시키신다. 생명이 하나님께 있음을 다시금 보여준다.
