The Philistines and the Ark
5 When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from ^qEbenezer to rAshdod. ² Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it up beside ^sDagon. 3 And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, ^tDagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But when they rose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the Lord, ^uand the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon ^vdo not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 ^wThe hand of the Lord was heavy against the people of Ashdod, and he terrified and afflicted them with xtumors, both Ashdod and its territory. 7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for his hand is hard against us and against Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and gathered together all ^ythe lords of the Philistines and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” So they brought the ark of the God of Israel there. 9 But after they had brought it around, ^zthe hand of the Lord was against the city, causing a very great panic, and he afflicted the men of the city, both young and old, so that xtumors broke out on them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But as soon as the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought around to us the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people.” 11 ^yThey sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, that it may not kill us and our people.” For there was a deathly panic throughout the whole city. wThe hand of God was very heavy there. 12 The men who did not die were struck with ^xtumors, and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

하나님의 궤의 이동

5장에서의 궤의 이동 : 에벤에셀-아스돗(다곤 신전)-가드-에그론

블레셋은 궤를 탈취하여 처음에는 기뻐했지만 도리어 여호와의 능력의 증거가 되었다. 

1-3절) 궤를 다곤의 곁에 둔 이유는 탈취한 궤로 여호와 하나님이 다곤을 섬긴다는 것을 상징적으로 보여주기 위한 것이었다. 하지만 결과는 충격적이었다. 남성적인, 그리고 전쟁의 승리를 주도했던 자신의 신 다곤이 지금 여호와의 궤앞에 엎드러져 얼굴도 들지 못하고 있는 것이다. 

- 블레셋의 5개 주요도시 :  Ashdod and Ekron were the two northernmost cities of the Philistine pentapolis (five ruling cities: Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, Ekron; see 6:17).

4절) 그런데 다음날 아침에는 더 끔찍한 일이 벌어졌다. 다곤 신상이 궤앞에 또다시 엎드려졌을뿐만 아니라 머리와 손목이 끊어져 문지방에 있었던 것이다. 이러한 모습은 군사적 처형의 모습과 같다. 

-  Dagon’s head and hands had been “broken off” (Hb. krt; “cut off”) in a manner reminiscent of grisly military executions (cf. 17:51; 31:9; 2 Sam 4:12).^65

Zwickel compares the text’s description of the statue’s broken form with archaeological data and concludes the story has been modified during the postexilic period to conform to later iconoclastic customs (“Dagons abgeschlagener Kopf [1 Samuel v 3–4],” VT 44 [1994]: 239–49). This suggestion misses the parallels noted in the other Scriptures that suggest that Yahweh was “executing” Dagon using a technique of military execution.

블레셋의 여러 도시가운데 하나님의 능력을 증거하심, 이는 마치 출애굽때 이적을 통해서 그들의 우상을 멸하심으로 하나님만이 온 우주의 창조주이심을 증거하는 모습과 유사하다. 하지만 유의할 것은 하나님의 궤 자체가 능력을 보장하는 것이 아님을 유의해야 한다. 하나님의 이름으로 행하는 수 많은 이들속에도 하나님이 없을수 있음을 유념하라.
