The Widow’s Offering
41 rAnd he sat down opposite sthe treasury and watched the people tputting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two usmall copper coins, which make a penny.6 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, vthis poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her wpoverty has put in everything she had, all xshe had to live on.”

41절) 예수님께서 여인의 뜰에 놓여있던 헌금함을 보시고 앉으셔서 사람들이 헌금함에 어떻게 헌금을 하는지를 보셨다.
헌금함은 여인의 뜰에 위치해 있었고 13개의 트럼펫 모양의 용기로 구성되어 있는데 이는 성전세와 여러가지 자발적인 헌금을 바치는 용도로 사용된 것이다.
- The “treasury” appears to have been located in the court of women and appears to have consisted of thirteen trumpet-shaped receptacles for both the temple tax and money given voluntarily for various purposes.23

42절) 본문의 렙돈(lepta)는 유대의 동전 단위로 1/128 데나리온에 해당하는 액수이다. 하루치 품삯을 10만원으로 계산할때 한 렙돈은 781원에 해당하고 본문의 과부가 드린 두 렙돈은 1562원에 해당하는 액수이다. 본문의 렙돈은 로마 제국의 화폐단위가 아니었기때문에 이를 또한 한 고드란트라고 설명해주고 있다.

43-44절) 이 과부의 헌금에 대해서 주님께서는 헌금함에 넣는 모든 사람보다 많이 넣었다라고 평가하신다. 부자들은 자신이 풍족한 중에 넣었지만 이 과부는 가난한 중에 자기의 모든 소유 곧 생활비 전부를 넣었다는 것이다. 주님께서 말씀하시는 핵심은 그 헌금의 양보다 얼마나 희생적으로 우선순위를 가지고 있느냐에 있는 것이다. 얼마나를 드렸느냐보다 이 사람이 드리고 나서 자신을 위해서 얼마를 남겼느냐를 가지고 평가하신 것이다. 주님은 이처럼 그 행동의 결과, 얼마나 드렸느냐보다 그 태도, 가난한 중에 자신이 가진 소유의 모든 것을 드린 그 자세, 태도를 중요하게 여기신 것이다. 이 과부의 헌금은 온전히 하나님만을 신뢰하는 자세를 보여주고 있다.
- Jesus indicated that the thing of most importance is not how much is given but the extent to which the gift is a sacrificial one. Or to put it another way, the most significant thing is not how much is given but how much is left for one’s personal use after the gift. A major element of Jesus’ teaching is that attitude is more important than action. The widow’s total giving demonstrates an attitude of absolute trust in God.
