Luke is almost certainly the one who authored the Gospel of Luke as well as Acts (see also Col. 4:14; 2 Tim. 4:11). Luke was apparently with Paul throughout his two-year imprisonment in Caesarea and then in his two-year Roman imprisonment. Lamentably, Demas later followed worldly pursuits and deserted Paul (2 Tim. 4:10).

- Typically, Paul’s last word to his readers reminds them of the availability of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ:living within Christ’s lordship will enable his disciples, especially Philemon, to respond to the apostle’s advice (see commentary on Col 4:23). Martin adds that this prayer is a “liturgical grace that situates the letter in the house congregation at worship” (1991:145), reminding current readers that all Paul’s writings are for nurturing the worshiping community.

Not just a fuller but equivalent expression of “with you,” this concluding phrase suggests the collaboration of Christ’s Spirit, who mediates his grace, with Philemon’s human spirit, which receives it and applies it to life (Wall 1979:128–44). Such an image lies at the very core of Paul’s participatory Christology: God’s salvation-creating grace transforms the believer who actively collaborates with Christ in the ongoing work of God.

하나님께서는 이 인생 역전의 드라마를 당신의 사람들을 통해서 이루어 가셨다. 주인을 통해 도망간 오네시모, 그는 바울을 만나 구원을 받고 다시 옛 주인 빌레몬에게 보내진다. 바울은 빌레몬에게 이제 더이상 그를 종이 아니라 주안에서 사랑하는 형제요 동역자로 여길 것을 요청한다. 이처럼 우리는 우리의 삶의 현재 가운데서는 하나님의 역사하심을 인식하지 못할 수 있다. 하지만 시간이 지나 우리의 삶을 되돌아볼때 하나님의 손길을 깨닫게 된다. 이 편지의 이야기는 우리에게 우리의 가장 어두운 순간, 깊은 절망, 가장 두려운 불순종도 하나님의 목적 안에서 어떤 의미를 가진다는 것을 보여준다. 우리 모두는 하나님의 큰 그림 속의 일부이다. 하지만 우리는 전체를 보지 못하고 우리 개인의 영역만을 바라보는 것이 문제이다.
- In the story of Onesimus we can see the mysterious providence of God at work. We will never know how Onesimus eventually met Paul after making good his escape. We can only know from the use of the passive voice, “he was separated from you” (v. 16), that Paul believed that God’s hand was in what had happened. The escapade turned out differently than any might have expected, in that Onesimus ultimately escaped into the arms of God’s grace. He could not escape God’s eye on him. We cannot straighten the lines of our crooked paths in life, but God can. God can take our worst intentions and turn them around for good, healing broken lives and broken relationships. In Onesimus’s culture, others could only see a slave, a useless slave, and worse a runaway slave. God saw more and purposed greater things for him.
- Everything turns out differently from what was foreseen by either master or slave. God was using this escape to bring Onesimus to Paul.175Paul sends him back to his master as a brother who, he trusts, will send him forth as a coworker in the gospel. We usually can only see the traces of God’s hand in our lives in retrospect. The story behind the letter can help us see that even our darkest moments, deepest despair, and most dreadful disobedience can have some meaning in God’s purposes. We are all part of some great tapestry, but usually we can only make out the individual threads.
- 175The “perhaps” in verse 15 reveals the input of human freedom in this process. God’s purposes are accomplished through the agency of humans. Paul could have spurned this runaway slave; instead, he “begot” him in the faith (v. 11; niv, “who became my son”). Philemon is free to balk at Paul’s request, but Paul trusts that God’s purposes for both will prevail.
