본문은 서신의 특성을 잘 보여준다. 저자와 편지를 받는 수신자, 청중에 대한 인사말로 본문을 시작하고 있다. 

1절) 저자 : 그리스도 예수를 위하여 갇힌 자 된 바울, 바울은 자신을 예수를 위하여 갇힌 자라고 소개한다. 바울은 이 짧은 한장의 서신에 세 번 반복해서 갇힌 것에 대해서 언급하고 있다.(9, 13, 23절) 

다른 서신서에서는 일반적으로 바울 자신의 사도성을 언급하는 것을 가장 중요하게 표현했는데 본문에서는 단지 자신을 그리스도를 위해 갇힌 자라고 표현하고 있다. 본문이 여러 수신자, 빌레몬의 집에 모인 교회를 향해서 쓴 것이지만 빌레몬이 주 수신자이고 이미 바울의 사역을 이해하고 함께 동역하는 관계였기에 그의 사도성을 강조할 필요를 느끼지는 않았다. 도리어 자신이 갇혀 있지만 그들을 향해서 은혜와 평강을 구하며 빌레몬에게도 새로운 질서와 가치관을 받아들이고 화해와 용서를 요청하기 위해서 자신을 이렇게 표현한 것이다. 

사실 그는 로마의 감옥에 갇혀 있을 뿐만 아니라 그리스도께 매여있는 자라는 정체성이 더 강한 사람이었다. 우리는 일반적으로 사람의 이름을 부르면서 그 앞에 그의 정체성을 드러내는 표현을 사용한다. 예수님께는 ‘구주’, 베드로는 ‘반석’, 바울은 '갇힌 자’로 표현했다. 

• The use of prisonerwithout the article is unusual and may suggest that Paul uses it as part of his proper name, which regularly is given without an article (Harris 1991:244). Since added names suggest the nature of a person’s calling (Jesus is “Savior,” Peter is “Rock”), Paul may well identify himself as Christ’s prisoner to indicate the very substance of his missionary task and its costs. Further, he may be implying that the costliness of Christian ministry is the result of the revolutionary content of his message, thereby preparing Philemon for the revolutionary character of Paul’s request of him. Paul’s message bears witness to a new social order, and for that reason he finds himself in jail. This prepares us, then, for a radical word concerning the relations between a Roman slave and his owner.
• While Paul’s imprisonment represents his missionary identity, it is Jesus for whom Paul is imprisoned. The response Paul strongly desires from Philemon springs from his orientation toward discipleship: because of Christ Jesus, Philemon should respond favorably toward Onesimus, even though it may be costly and at odds with the surrounding social order.

수신자 : 빌레몬., 바울은 그를 우리의 사랑을 받는 자요 동역자라고 묘사한다. 사랑을 받는 자라는 표현은 ‘아가페토스’로 특별히 사랑을 받는 자라는 의미이다. 다른 바울의 서신에서 이 단어는 신자들을 향한 사랑을 표현하는데 사용되었다. 또한 그는 동역자로 바울이 그를 자신의 사역, 이방 선교를 위한 사역에 함께 하는 이로 여겼다는 사실을 보여준다. 바울이 빌레몬에게 이런 태도를 보여준것이 이후에 오네시모를 향해서 바울이 요청하는 자세일 것이다. 

• Perhaps Philemon is named first because he is the patron of the household church that meets in his home and not because Paul’s request will be directed primarily to him. Yet Paul’s affectionate greeting of him as dear friend and fellow workersuggests a more significant intent. Actually, “dear friend” translates a single word, agapētos,“beloved one.” Elsewhere in his writings Paul uses this as a term of affection for believers (Rom 1:7) and congregations (Phil 2:12). Paul further refers to Philemon as a fellow worker,which identifies him as one among others (see v. 24) who worked with Paul in the Gentile mission.

2절) 이어지는 수신자로 압비아와 아킵보가 등장한다. 이들이 누구인지는 분명하지 않다. 압비아는 자매로, 아킵보는 우리와 함께 병사된 자라고 표현하고 나아가서 빌레몬 네 집에 있는 교회에게 편지한다고 밝히고 있다. 

일반적으로 압비아는 빌레몬의 아내일 것으로 본다. 

아킵보는 앞서 골 4:17에 등장한다. 바울은 그를 함께 병사된 자로 평가한다. 이로 볼때 바울의 선교 사역에 있어서 매우 중요한 역할을 감당했고 여러 핍박과 어려움, 감옥에 갇혀 있는 상황가운데서도 신실하게 바울을 지지하고 함께 한 것으로 여겨진다. 

• Certainly, however, Philemon is not Paul’s only addressee. Two other names are mentioned, Apphia our sisterand Archippus, along with the church that meets in [Philemon’s] home.The exact identities of Apphia and Archippus are unknown. Most scholars speculate that Apphia is Philemon’s wife; her name is Phrygian, she is a Christian sister,known to Paul, and Paul places her name alongside Philemon’s in the address (Lightfoot 1876:306–8). Probably this Archippus is the one mentioned in Colossians 4:17, where Paul’s cryptic exhortation suggests that he has fallen prey to the Colossian “philosophy” (see commentary on Col 4:17). The reference to him here as a fellow soldiertells a different story. According to O’Brien, the term Paul uses to address Archippus designates him as one who has “played an important part in assisting Paul in his missionary labors, and has faithfully stood at his side through persecution and trial—perhaps even imprisonment” (O’Brien 1983:273).

병사의 이미지는 훈련, 헌신, 위험에도 불구하고 자신의 삶을 드리는 것을 보여준다.(빌 2:25) 본문이 실제의 군인이라기 보다는 그리스도를 위하여 병사된, 헌신된 모습을 강조하는 표현이다. 

네 집에 있는 교회 : 당시의 초대 교회에는 특별히 건물을 가지고 있지 않았다. 일반적으로 구성원중에 여유가 있는 사람이 자신의 집을 모임의 공간으로 제공했다. 

3절) 은혜와 평강 : 빌레몬은 예수 그리스도를 통해 하나님으로부터 오는 은혜와 그리스도의 죽음을 통해 오는 평강을 경험했다. 은혜는 죄의 용서를 가져오고 평강은 하나님과 다른 사람들 사이의 화해를 가져온다. 바울은 본문에서 예수 그리스도를 은혜와 평강의 기원으로 하나님 아버지와 같은 레벨로 놓고 있다. 나아가 바울은 벨레몬에게 그리스도께 받은 은혜와 화해를 자신에게 잘못을 행한 다른 동료 그리스도인에게 확장시킬 것을 요청하고 있는 것이다. 

• Grace and peace.Philemon has experienced grace from God through Jesus Christ, and peace has come through Christ’s death (Rom 5:1; Eph 2:14–17). Grace brings the forgiveness of sin, and peace brings reconciliation with God and others (see note on Gal 1:3). Paul places Jesus Christ on the same level with God the Father as the source of grace and peace, and Paul expects Philemon to extend the same grace and reconciliation he has received from Christ to a fellow Christian who has wronged him.
